Gudeg Bu Tjitro 1925
Visiting the city of Yogyakarta won’t feel completed without tasting one of its most popular cuisines, a dish known to many as gudeg. Although there are many cheap restaurants in Yogyakarta that served this traditional food, there is only one restaurant that has long been famed among the Jogjans for serving gudeg with special and savory taste, Gudeg Bu Tjitro 1925.
Established in 1925, Gudeg Bu Tjitro 1925 first founded by the legendary figure Mrs. Tjitro Sastrodiprojo, who inspires motivation and innovation by using “Gudeg” as their main menu. Bu (Mrs.) Tjitro pioneered the effort by selling gudeg with traditional concepts in front of her yard on Jl. Rotowidjayan in the morning and at Ngasem Traditional Market in the afternoon. As her business grows, she is able to establish a number of restaurants in Jakarta and Yogyakarta with Gudeg as their main menu. Although it was started as a traditional gudeg busines, now Gudeg Bu Tjitro 1925 is reborn with a more modern concept and full of innovation without leaving its indigenous identity and culture as a traditional eateries.
As its name implies, the cuisine known as Gudeg is the flagship menu of Gudeg Bu Tjitro 1925.
This delicious dish is made from young Nangka (jack fruit) boiled for several hours with palm sugar, and coconut milk. Additional spices include garlic, shallot, candlenut, coriander seed, galangal, bay leaves, and teak leaves, the latter giving a reddish brown color to the dish. Then it is served with fluffy white rice, papaya kit (buntil pepaya), and tofu and/or tempe (fermented soy block), and a stew made of crisp beef skins (sambal goreng krecek). Chickens and eggs can be used to complement the dish that is presented on a clay plate lined with banana leaves on its bottom. Opor sauce that is poured over the top of the gudeg brings a savory and incredible flavor. Not to forget a serving of spicy bajag chili sauce that adds a special flavor to this traditional Jogja dish.
Although Gudeg is their mainstay menu, this restaurant also served other menu as well. You may as well try the delicious Beancurd Soup or the unique Herbal Chicken. For those of you who just want to sit back and enjoy a snack, a crispy Calamari Hot Ring or a wide selection of ice cream ready to be an option. A wide selection of food is available and priced at between Rp 9,000 – Rp 150,000, while a selection of beverages such as tea pot, lemongrass tea, roselle tea, fruit or vegetable juices, until the rice kencur drink that can be enjoyed with a starting price of Rp 4,000 – Rp 18,500.
As an added value, Gudeg Bu Tjitro 1925 is the first restaurant ever in Indonesia that create the first gudeg dish that can be eaten almost anywhere and anytime in the form of gudeg kendil and canned gudeg, which can has a shelf-life of two days and a year, respectively.
Gudeg Bu Tjitro 1925 is located in Jl. Janti 330, opposite of the Jogja Expo Center (JEC). It can be reached by a 10 to 15 minutes drive from Adisucipto International Airport or from Kraton Yogyakarta.
The restaurant occupies a 2-storey building, whith cozy and classy atmosphere. It is complemented with cross-legged sitting eating area, VIP Room with a capacity of 17 people, and Meeting Room with 50 people capacity on the 2nd floor where you can book for gatherings or meetings.
